Today was a rather exciting day for the Chattanooga Girls Choir and our adventure in the Land of the Leprechauns. To start with we had an absolutely divine breakfast provided for us by the Western Inn and we rolled out in our bus with our charming tour guide Sean, his loyal sidekick and bus driver Peter, and the overseer of us all, Martin.
Our first stop, after passing through many towns and villages, we came to the Aillwee Cave, "Ireland's premier show cave." The cave was indeed very interesting, but I believe the girls had more fun at this snack shop outside the cave where there was this set of stairs that let you get up on the roof and freak the people out below when you shouted at them.
Sometime after that we began a descent on a mountain in the middle of nowhere for some scenic shots. Peter bravely parked on the wrong side of the road so we could get out and we sprinted on when a bus came barreling towards us only to stop two millimeters from us. Apparently they were inspired by our actions and dittoed our endeavor by parking on the wrong side of the road so the tourists could get out and see what they could see.
At the summit of this mountain in the middle of nowhere we came across a tomb. No one really knows why it was built but it is the oldest standing structure in Ireland so that was a good enough reason to stop.
I do believe now that the weather of Ireland does not like the choir out of the bus, and it always picks "convenient" times to rain on us; like this day for instance, we were taking pictures of the tomb (and keep in mind we were about one eighth of a mile from the bus) and it started to rain, hard. We ran in the hard rain (an eighth of a mile) to the bus. We were so drenched and do you know what kind thing the bus did, turned the air conditioner on!
Going back downhill in our wet clothes and hearing our tour guide talk was relatively…calm. We ate lunch and then we got on the bus to go to the Cliffs of Moher. This is where we had to say good-bye to Sean. We sang Danny Boy to him and he sang an Irish farewell song. We had a few sniffles.
The Moher Cliffs are colossal, stupendous, monolithic, and well...big. We had a lot of picture moments there. Now, Mr. Holden made it perfectly clear that we were not to go near the cliff edge, that people died on it. (For some sickening reason that caused a peal of laughter.) We as a group followed those instructions, but other people didn't. The words that pulled our attention to the true imbeciles of the world were voiced by Grace: "WHAT ARE THOSE IDIOTS DOING?!" True to her words, idiots were teetering on the edge of the cliff.
We ended our touring today with that and a visit to O'Brian (alleged inheritance to a certain Meg O'Brian) and we came to Limerick and checked in to our hotel where we had dinner which was, as custom, glorious. Our beloved Grace fulfilled her namesake for that day by falling out of a chair while sitting in it. The legend is that she was reaching for her purse but eye witnesses swear Ms. Gina pushed her.
Well that's about it. Another day, another dollar, and a whole mess of delightful moments.
The view over Galway in the middle of "nowhere".
Lots of hugs and tears when saying good-bye to charming tour guide Sean Kelly.
The awesome Cliffs of Moher in County Clare.
