Day 2: Sightseeing in San Francisco

After leaving the hotel we traveled to Lombard Street, which is so crooked and steep that tour buses are not allowed to go on the street. We hiked up the back side of the street and then down the crooked section, stopping often for photos! (It took about an hour).
From there we went to Pier 41 and got on a Blue and Gold Ferry to Alcatraz. The boat ride there was very windy. When arriving at Alcatraz we saw many different types of birds and plants that are not native to our area. We watched a 30-minute video that was an introduction and history of Alcatraz. After that we received head phones for an audio tour through the prison. Former inmates and wardens described life at Alcatraz. We went through the cells of famous inmates, and through corridors that they had named after New York sites--Broadway, Fifth Avenue.
We spent about 3 hours at Alcatraz, then we took the ferry back to Pier 41 where we then walked to Fisherman's Wharf. We ate at two different restaurants. (The Holdens and Penny went to a totally different place than we did!).
After lunch we walked to Ghirardelli chocolate factory where everyone enjoyed chocolate, ice cream, and other sweets. We walked throughout Ghirardelli square, browsing through the many shops.
We came back to the hotel for a little over an hour and we were allowed to do our own thing for a while. (We got stuck writing this instead!)
We had dinner at a local food court that had over 150 different types of foods.
Our day of sight-seeing in San Francisco was fun. The Golden Gate Music Festival begins tomorrow.
