2004 Summer Tour: Chicago and Milwaukee

Day 9
Tuesday, June 29, 2004

[This report was phoned in by Tarbell Patton from Chicago on Tuesday night.]

For once, everyone was on time this morning, even the bus. Today was our designated shopping day, and we all made the most of it. We were driven to downtown Chicago near Michigan Avenue, where we separated into chaperone groups and spent the next six hours wandering in and out of stores and museums and restaurants until everyone was satisfied...well, close, at least. One thing we know: Shatura and Jessica are going to have fun trying to find room in their suitcases for all the shoes they bought!

Probably the best story of the day came from chaperone Lisa Beem, who braved taking her group into Cartier's, the very upscale jewelry store. She figured the worst that could happen would be that they would get thrown out. Well, quite the opposite happened. The sales associate who greeted them was very welcoming, showing the girls some beautiful pieces of jewelry and even taking a $75,000 emerald ring out of the case for all the girls to try on!

The groups all met back at the bus at 5:00 and were taken back to the hotel to freshen up and stash their packages, and then everyone went to Gameworks for a dinner of hot dogs, hamburgers, and pasta, followed by an hour in the game room. This is not your ordinary game room. In addition to pinball, air hockey, and assorted video games, Gameworks also has virtual Skidoos; a virtual rollercoaster that actually rocks and goes upside down, according to the way you design it; virtual hot air balloons that "float" up and down and battle each other in the "air" using spikes on the top of each balloon; and virtual race cars, complete with a live announcer who keeps everyone informed of who is winning and who is wrecking! The chaperones had several car races that had participants and spectators all laughing so hard they could hardly breathe. Everyone had a terrific time and came away happy and tired and ready for a good night's sleep before moving on to Downers Grove tomorrow.

Incidentally, the annual Awards Night was originally planned for tonight, but the hotel didn't have an appropriate room in which to hold it. Therefore, it was decided to postpone the awards ceremony until tomorrow afternoon when the group has an unscheduled hour or two at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Of course, our traditional girls still apparently plan to pretend the event is being held at nighttime. Stay tuned!

Gameworks fun
Looks like Tarbell and Sharon have had a few too many turns on the virtual rollercaster!
