Day 5
Friday, June 25, 2004
[Note from Amy: This report was e-mailed by Tarbell Patton from Milwaukee.]
We started this morning with a good breakfast at the hotel, and then we drove to the Basilica of St. Josaphat in downtown Milwaukee. This church was built by the Polish community in the late 1800's. We were given a tour by one of the parishioners, and learned a lot about the history of the church. We then drove to Gesu Church, where the tour choir performed for the noon mass and then gave a mini-concert after the mass. They were very appreciative of our participation, and really complimented the girls on the job they did.
After leaving Gesu Church, we drove to the Milwaukee Zoo where we ate lunch and viewed the various exhibits. We decided to spend more time at the zoo and forego the decorative arts museum due to the tight scheduling. This gave us a little more time to see the zoo, and return to the hotel to change for dinner. We ate dinner at the Tumbleweed Steakhouse, and really enjoyed it.
We then left for an evening at the Milwaukee Symphony. Tonight's program featured the Symphony and the Symphony Chorus with selections from Charles Ives, Kernis, and Zemlinsky. Katie P. said the music was so beautiful that it literally brought tears to her eyes. The second half of the program was Dvorak's Symphony No. 9, which we all enjoyed. After the performance, we went back stage and met some of the members of the symphony chorus, and they talked to the girls about their journeys through music, and how important it was to use the musical gifts you have. Then back to the hotel to prepare for another busy day tomorrow.
The girls enjoyed the Milwaukee Zoo. Notice the albino giraffe in the background!
