2003 Summer Tour: Austria

Day 2
Saturday, June 7, 2003

We're in Vienna! After we landed in Austria and sailed easily through customs, we were met by our tour escort, a charming Austrian woman named Helga. We loaded up our tour bus and drove to the hotel, with Helga pointing out interesting sights on the way. Our hotel is really nice, with a friendly staff and large rooms, most with air conditioning (unusual in Europe). We had an hour to freshen up, then we left on foot for a nearby amusement park, where the girls spent the next few hours riding roller coasters, large Ferris wheels, and some thrill rides they had never seen before.

Our bus picked us up at the amusement park and took us to the nearby grounds where many famous composers are buried, including Johann Strauss, Franz Schubert, and Beethoven himself. The older girls seemed particularly impressed by this cemetery, having sung so much of the music created by these great men.

Hungry and tired, we returned to downtown Vienna and strolled through downtown while we waited for time for our dinner reservation. We walked to St. Stephen's Cathedral, an incredibly huge and beautiful structure built in the 12th century, and we were lucky enough to hear part of a mass, including several solos by a talented boy soprano. On the way back to the restaurant, the girls stopped to watch watching various street performers, including a "statue" of Strauss (or Mozart?) who was smitten with our Cari!

Dinner at the restaurant was traditional Austrian weiner schnitzel, and the girls seemed to really enjoy it. But at last it was time to return the hotel for a long night's sleep. This was our master plan -- keep ourselves awake all day so that we'd all sleep soundly tonight and hopefully avoid too much jet lag. We'll let you know if it worked!
