Day 1
Friday, June 6, 2003
Our trip is off to a smooth start. The journey from Chattanooga to Atlanta was uneventful, and though the check-in and security process was very long, we all got through OK. Of course, some of us (including Penny Tullock, our accompanist!) did have to remove our shoes and be given a thorough scan-and-frisk by security before they were satisfied that we had no hidden weapons!
The best part of the day came as we were waiting at our departure gate. We had been noticing a lot of Marines (we estimate 150 to 200!) in desert fatigues in our area, and we found out that they were on their way to California after six months in Kuwait and Iraq. They asked the choir to sing something for them, so John Wigal took the girls down to the Marines' waiting area, lined them up, and directed them in an a capella rendition of "America the Beautiful." When the girls finished, the Marines burst into a huge roar of approval and appreciation. Most of the girls said the sound was so loud that it startled them, but all said it was a moment they would remember and cherish all their lives. What I will also remember is the many girls that said thank you back to the Marines for their service to our country.
We returned to our gate, boarded our plane, and spent the next 8 1/2 hours dozing, reading, eating airplane food, and watching the movie "Just Married". Even our first-time flyers seemed a little bored after the first hour, but we never heard any complaints from anyone. After switching planes in Frankfurt, we were almost to Vienna!
The tour group gathered for final pictures before leaving for Atlanta.
The tour choir performed for a very large group of Marines in the Atlanta airport.
First-time flyers Whitley and Kasey seem relaxed enough!
Brooke J., Jesse, and Amanda V. found a creative way to get comfortable!
Alyson, Cari, Krystle, and Jackie relax while waiting for our connecting flight in Frankfurt.
