Day 7
Mon., June 26
We got our wake-up calls at 5:00 am today, and the girls were downstairs with their suitcases by 6:00. After breakfast, we headed straight for the airport in the incredible Los Angeles traffic. (How do they cope with this every day?!) After a relatively smooth check-in at the gate, we found our gate and boarded our plane, but when Mrs. Thompson sat in her seat, it was so loose it fell backwards! She was fine, but the seat was not. After attempting to repair it, the airline decided that the whole row on that side could not be used. Unfortunately, the plane was totally full, so they finally found volunteers from among the other passengers who agreed to take a later flight. Finally, after an hour on the ground, we were allowed to leave. Exhausted after a week of busy days and late nights, a lot of the girls slept most of the way, waking up for only for meals and snacks.
We were really concerned about making our connecting flight in Dallas, since the planned layover was less than 50 minutes, and we'd lost more than that on the ground! Fortunately, the pilot made up a lot of the time in the air, so we had about 30 minutes between flights, or about 10 minutes to change terminals and find our gate before boarding began. We didn't quite run, but we hurried the group as quickly as we could and arrived in plenty of time. The flight to Atlanta was uneventful, aside from having to circle until a thunderstorm passed over the airport. (It also seemed odd that we were only served a little bag of pretzels on a two-hour flight. They overfed us on the way to California!)
Our bus was waiting for us in Atlanta, and soon we were on our way home. The choir broke into a spontaneous chorus of "Rocky Top" as we crossed the Tennessee border. The bus pulled up at First Baptist Church at about 10:15, to the cheers and smiles of welcoming families.
This has been a thoroughly enjoyable tour, thanks to your wonderful children, my terrific fellow chaperones, incredible and irreplaceable Ed Huey, and the incomparable Penny Tullock. All good things must come to an end, but how great to end on such a positive note.
See you next summer! - Amy Campbell
