2000 Tour: Los Angeles

Day 5
Sat., June 24

Another busy day! After the usual morning buffet breakfast, the choir took the bus to Villa Park High School, where they had a 1-1/2 hour workshop with Mary Blakely of the Pacific Symphony Children's Choir. (While the girls were thus occupied, the chaperones took advantage of their brief moment of freedom to wander around a nearby shopping strip and/or have a quiet cup of coffee!) When the girls returned, they had some interesting comments to make about the workshop and the director's techniques. (Ask your girl later.) It was obvious that she had a very different style from Mr. Huey, but they can learn from that also.

It was decided that one quick sightseeing stop today would be enough, since the girls wanted to spend as much time as possible back at Disneyland, so we were taken to the Movieland Wax Museum, where we wandered past a seemingly endless parade of full-size wax statues of famous actors and singers. George Burns, Marilyn Monroe, Fred Astaire, Carol Burnett, Harrison Ford, the entire cast of Star Trek, Charlie Chaplin...all the stars were there. All were amazingly lifelike, and some were so like the real thing it would've been hard to tell them apart. There was also a "Chamber of Horrors" area depicting famous horror movies such as Frankenstein and Psycho.

After everyone had wandered all the way through the long winding pathway inside the museum, we said good-bye to George Burns and headed back to the hotel to get ready to go to Disneyland. Some groups chose to stay and eat lunch at the hotel or near-by the hotel, and some left for Disneyland right away on the hotel shuttle, choosing to eat lunch at Disneyland.

The two seniors and two other Grace Moore girls went to Disneyland for just the afternoon, returning to the hotel to change for a night out with Mr. and Mrs. Huey (a tour tradition) at a local dinner theater. They saw a murder mystery that required audience participation. The storyline called for a jingle to be written for a product called Pharoah's Finest Soap, and when they found out the Girls Choir had members there, the girls were asked to compose a jingle to the tune of Chattanooga Choo-Choo! They worked on it through dinner, then performed it for the audience, complete with choreography, and the crowd loved it. The annual "Seniors Night Out" was a success once again!

The Concert Choir groups that went to Disneyland stayed through dinner there, getting in as many rides and as much shopping as possible in the enormous Saturday crowd, then returned on the hotel shuttle (improvising "It's a Small World" in harmony on the way!). The last group got back to the hotel at 10:40 and went straight to their rooms to shower and go to sleep, because tomorrow morning they have to be downstairs for breakfast -- in full concert dress -- by 7:00 am., since the choir will sing both the 8:30 and 11:00 services at Los Altos United Methodist. It will be their last performance for this tour.
