Day 1
Tues., June 20
The choir made it safely to Los Angeles today. Here's hoping the tour continues to go as smoothly as it has begun!
The touring choir departed by bus at about 8:20 this morning and had an uneventful trip to Atlanta. Once there, we were efficiently checked in by the American Airlines staff, then walked through the security checkpoint to find our gate right in front of us. The flight left on time and arrived in Dallas-Ft. Worth on time, which gave some hungry girls a chance to buy lunch during our layover. We had been told there would be no lunch on the plane to Los Angeles, but that turned out to be not exactly true -- a snack lunch was served which filled any remaining empty tummies. The girls (and chaperones!) also caught a nap on the plane and arrived in L.A. at 3:20 Pacific time (6:20 Eastern), refreshed and ready for the rest of the day.
We were met by our tour guide, Mark Hix, a California native who also happens to play jazz trumpet professionally. Mark took us for an early dinner at Hard Rock Cafe, after which the girls had some time to browse in the adjoining mall. It was a real eye-opener for some girls to see the price tags in Macy's and Bloomingdale's! They expressed a new appreciation for the department stores in Chattanooga.
At last we headed for the Radisson Hotel in Fullerton, where everyone was issued a room key and was instructed to go straight to bed, since the wake-up call will be at 6:15 a.m. To press the point home, Mr. Huey serenaded the choir with his harmonica, interspersing lyrics like "If you're not here, it's true...the bus will leave without you". (If you've ever heard the song "Bad to the Bone," then you know the style!) His efforts were rewarded with applause and laughter... and, so far, cooperation. The girls are tucked in for the night. Tomorrow morning they have a choir workshop at Fullerton College, followed by an afternoon at Universal Studios. Sounds fun!
---------------------
"This is kinda cool!", says Morgan (right), who was one of several girls taking their first airplane flight ever. Morgan was given moral support by Jennifer (left) and Mr. and Mrs. Huey.
Meredith and Ashley are obviously enjoying their snack on the flight to L.A.
With varying degrees of enthusiasm, the girls wait for the tour bus outside the Los Angeles airport.
Grace Moore singers Chaya, Jennifer, Carol, and Elizabeth enjoy the Hard Rock Cafe with accompanist Penny Tulluck and Chaya's sister Chetna.
Brandy, Ashley, Jessica, Jackie, Krystal, Meredith, and Amanda wait for their ice cream desert at Hard Rock Cafe.
