1999 Tour: England and France

Day 3
Wed., June 30, 1999

The hotel provide a wake-up call to the choir's rooms at 6:15 this morning, and soon we were all gathered for a quick breakfast of cereal and various breads. By 8:00 we were on our buses heading out for a two-hour coach tour of London. The weather was clear and beautiful, and we got perfect views of all the major sights: the Tower Bridge, Westminster Abbey, the London Dungeon, the Tower of London, etc. The girls have been busily taking lots of photos. I should add that one of the main "sights" for Bus #2 (Concert Choir) is our new tour guide, Brendon, a young man who apparently has set some young hearts aflutter. He has also proved to be a very competent and informative guide.

At the end of our bus tour, we were let off at the National Gallery, where we had almost two hours to wander and view works by Rembrandt, DaVinci, Picasso, Renoir, Monet, Van Gogh, and many others. The groups then split up to find lunch where they pleased. Many of the girls ate at a nearby pub, where the food was plentiful and good, but the tables somewhat low and small. After lunch, the chaperoned groups were free to wander London until 4:00. Some fed the pigeons at Trafalgar Square, some went to the nearest store to do some shopping (including many postcards featuring Prince William!), some walked to the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben -- whatever the group chose to do. After all of the groups had returned to the meeting point, the buses took us back to the Central Park Hotel for a group dinner. In the evening, the girls had a chance to visit each other's rooms, write letters, and pack for our departure from London. Tomorrow morning we head for Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge, and the beach at Bournemouth! [Maybe we'll have fewer Internet connection problems there? We'll see! - Amy Campbell]
